He was born on September 17, 1991, in Cairo, Egypt. Massoud and his family emigrated to Canada when he was very young. He’s stated that his family moved to Toronto when he was three years old.

The actor now calls Toronto home.
Prior to landing the lead role in Aladdin, Massoud played Tarek Kassar on the Amazon series Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan (2018). Additionally, he starred as Jared Malik on the Canadian television series Open Heart (2015). He also provided voice work for the animated sci-fi series “The 99” (2011).
While he was working steadily, he was not a household name until now.

How did he land the role of Aladdin?
We know from reports like these that it took months to find the leads for Disney’s Aladdin remake. There were rumors that a big name like Dev Patel or Riz Ahmed would get the part. Eventually, it was won by Mena Massoud, a relative unknown.
Massoud must have impressed the hell out of the casting directors, because he was chosen out of a group of over 2,000 actors, across multiple countries.
He’s said the hardest thing about learning he landed the part was not being able to tell anyone for five days until the official announcement was made.

How to Dress like Mena Massoud
We’re stoked for the press tour for this film because Massoud is such a snappy dresser. He’s never boring on the red carpet or on the street.
Fortunately, he (or his team) has been great about updating Twitter with all his stylish looks.
Red Carpet Style
For his red carpet appearances, Massoud prefers ultra high-end labels like Givenchy (below) and Valentino.
Recently, his ensembles have featured elements that nod to the Arabian aesthetic of Aladdin.
This includes metallic embellishment (like on that Givenchy suit), loose fits, and the way he wears his shirts buttoned up with no tie, which looks like the traditional dress tunic in certain Middle Eastern cultures.
Another way he did this was with his Valentino look at the Berlin premiere (see below).
There, he left his button-down shirt completely untucked.
Overall, many of Massoud’s red carpet looks involve the following:
- Interesting embellishments and embroidery
- Monochromatic color schemes
- Shirts buttoned up to the top without a tie
- A nod to the glamorous, Arabian aesthetic of Aladdin
Above, Massoud is wearing Ermenigildo Zegna, a favorite designer of fellow modest man, Tom Cruise.
Casual Style
Similar to his red carpet style, Massoud’s casual style involves bold prints, shirts buttoned all the way up, and metallic elements.
Since these are easy to identify in both his formal and casual looks, it’s clear he has a signature style.
- Loud jackets
- Bold Printed Shirts (buttoned to the top)
- Metallic elements
- Bomber Jackets
- Black tees
- Loafers with interesting socks
According to our sources, Mena Massoud has been styled primarily by LA-based stylist Ashley Weston during this press tour. She’s certainly earning her paycheck.

Not cool to hit on someones height like that. Just accept how he is and dont shame like that. If you wouldnt make fun of a woman’s weight don’t make fun of a man’s height
You don’t have to be taller than your female counterpart
He is talented
