Who Is Martin Scorsese?

Scorsese is an Italian-American filmmaker, producer and director. He’s best known for his Italian gangster films like Goodfellas (1990) and The Irishman (2019).

The vast majority of his films explore themes of Catholic guilt, redemption, Italian-American identity and violence.

1970s Feature Films Directed by Scorsese

In the 1970s, Scorsese had a major breakthrough with Mean Streets. The film became a calling card for Scorsese style direction with its machismo, bloody violence and gritty New York scenery. Of course, the film was actually shot in Los Angeles.

In 1974, he directed Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Although that romantic comedy isn’t signature Scorsese, it was still critically acclaimed.

Ellen Burstyn won an Academy Award for her role as Alice. But it was 1976’s critical and commercial success Taxi Driver that remains his best-known work from the 70s period.

1980s Movies Directed by Scorsese

Following the success of dark fare like Taxi Driver, the director had trouble with drug addiction and substance abuse. While in the hospital from drug-related internal bleeding, Scorsese was persuaded by Robert De Niro to create Raging Bull (1980).

It was the first film featuring the trio we know so well today. Scorsese directed De Niro and Pesci for the first time in Raging Bull. It’s still considered a masterpiece. Later, Scorsese directed De Niro again in The King of Comedy (1982), a black comedy about a kidnapper-turned-celebrity.

In 1986, he cast Paul Newman and Tom Cruise in The Color of Money, which was Scorsese’s first mainstream film. After its success, Scorsese was able to break ground on his passion project, The Last Temptation of Christ (1988).

1990s Scorsese-directed Movies

After playing around with different formats, classic Scorsese returned to form with the 1990 hit Goodfellas. Film critic Roger Ebert called it “the best mob movie ever,” and there’s no doubt a lot of people still feel that way thirty years after its release.

In 1991, he released Cape Fear, a psychological thriller. But, perhaps his best-loved film from the decade is Casino (1995).

2000s Feature Films Directed by Martin Scorsese

His best-known films from the aughts included 2002’s Gangs of New York, 2004’s The Aviator, and The Departed (2006). Leonardo DiCaprio and Scorsese frequently worked together during this period.

Gangs of New York was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis. However, it didn’t win a single trophy.

2010s Martin Scorsese Movies

In 2013, Scorsese again directed DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street.  During this time he also directed episodes of television shows like Boardwalk Empire and Vinyl.

While he had other projects like a Bob Dylan documentary and Silence (2016) during the past decade, he received a pile of praise for his Netflix film, The Irishman. The film brings together Joe Pesci, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.

With a career spanning 50 years, he’s considered one of the most influential and significant directors of all time. And he’s not done yet! Scorsese is currently scouting locations for his upcoming film, Killers of The Flower Moon. It will star Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.

How Tall Is Martin Scorsese?

Martin Scorsese is 5’3″ or 160cm. At five-foot-three, he’s on the more modest side of modest men.

He’s the same height as Joe Pesci, Rob Schneider and Bruno Mars. All three men are six inches shorter than the average American man.

Joe Pesci frequently collaborates with Scorsese. Maybe they see eye to eye. Scorsese directed Pesci in Casino (1995), Raging Bull (1980) and most recently The Irishman on Netflix.

How Old Is Martin Scorsese?

Scorsese is 77 years old.

What Is Martin Scorsese’s Net Worth?

As of 2020, Scorsese’s net worth is estimated at $120 million.

Who Are His Wife and Children?

Scorsese has been married five times. His fifth and current wife, Helen Schermerhorn Morris, wed him back in 1999. They have been together for over twenty years and share one daughter, Francesca.

Prior to marriage, Helen was a well-respected book publisher at Random House. While she prefers to stay out of the limelight, she’s now known as a generous philanthropist.

Scorsese has two other children, including the actress and director Domenica Cameron-Scorsese (age 44) .

Scorsese directed her in The Age of Innocence (1993). She played Katie Blenker. Domenica was just 16 years old during filming. And that wasn’t even her earliest gig! In his 1991 film Cape Fear, she appeared as “Danny’s Girlfriend.”

But Domenica isn’t the only Scorsese daughter to appear in her father’s films. Francesca Scorsese (age 21) appears in The Departed (2006) and The Aviator (2004). And Domenica herself directed Francesca in 2016’s Almost Paris.

Of course, Cathy couldn’t let Domenica and Francesca have all the fun on screen. Yes, you guessed it. Scorsese’s oldest daughter Cathy (age 55) is also in the entertainment industry. While she has a few acting credits to her name, Cathy Scorsese mostly works in set design.

She was in the art department on several of her father’s projects including 2010’s Shutter Island and The Departed. Cathy was even on set back in 1995 as the assistant property master for Casino.

Clearly, filmmaking runs in the family.
