How to NOT Waste Your Time Going on First Dates: 15 Signs Worth Noticing

Updated on March 19, 2026 by TMM Staff · Dating & Confidence

You’ve been there before. The pre-date nerves, the outfit changes, the mental prep talk about keeping an open mind. Then you sit down across from someone and within twenty minutes, you know. You already know. But you stay anyway because walking out feels rude, and maybe (maybe) you’re wrong.

Spoiler: you’re never wrong. That gut feeling knows what your hopeful brain wants to ignore. First dates reveal everything if you pay attention to the right details. The good news is you can spot the red flags early and save yourself the trouble of round two.

1. They Keep Rescheduling Things

@Kampus Production/Pexels.com

“Something came up” for the third time this week. At first, you gave them the benefit of the doubt. People get busy, life happens. But when someone actually wants to meet you, they make it happen. They don’t treat your time like a placeholder appointment because they can shuffle around whenever something “better” pops up.

Pay attention to how they reschedule, too. Do they immediately suggest a new time, or do they leave it hanging with a vague “we’ll figure it out later”? People who value you will reschedule and commit to the new plan. Everyone else? They’re keeping their options open while you wait around like a backup plan.

2. You Never Get a Clear Answer From Them

@Jopwell/Pexels.com

Ask them what they’re looking for and watch them perform verbal gymnastics. “I’m open to whatever happens,” they say. Or “I’m going with the flow right now.” Translation: they want all the benefits with none of the accountability.

Ambiguity feels safe for people who haven’t figured out what they want (or who know exactly what they want but suspect you won’t like the answer). You’re not asking them to propose marriage over appetizers. You’re asking basic questions about their intentions, and if they can’t give you a straight response, they’re telling you everything you need to know. Listen to the non-answer.

3. They Complain About Every Single One of Their Friends

@Liza Summer/Pexels.com

Nobody in their life gets a free pass. Their best friend from college? “Selfish and flaky.” Their coworker? “Takes credit for everything.” Their sister? “Always starts drama for no reason.” You start to wonder if they actually like anyone.

People who trash everyone around them will eventually add you to that list. Right now, you’re new and shiny, so you get the highlight reel of how “different” you are from all those other disappointing humans. Give it a few months. One argument, one misunderstanding, and you’ll become another character in their victim narrative.

4. They Act Like They’re Doing You a Favor by Showing Up

@Andrea Piacquadio/Pexels.com

The energy feels off from the second they arrive. They mention how “exhausted” they are, how they “almost cancelled,” how they “never do this anymore.” Okay? And you’re supposed to feel… grateful? Special? Like you won some kind of lottery?

Someone who actually wants to be there won’t make you feel like you owe them for their presence. They’ll be engaged, present, and (here’s a wild concept) happy to meet you. When your date treats the evening like community service they have to complete, believe them. They’re already checked out.

5. Their Stories Never Add Up

@Marcella Soáres/Pexels.com

They said they grew up in Seattle, but then mentioned going to high school in Denver. They claimed they hate seafood but ordered the salmon. Small details keep contradicting each other, and when you ask for clarification, they brush it off or change the subject entirely.

Lies on a first date mean one of two things: they’re either so used to bending the truth that they can’t keep track anymore, or they’re actively hiding something from you. Either way, you’re not getting the real person across the table. You’re getting the version they think will impress you most, and that performance has an expiration date.

6. They Keep Bringing Up Money in Weird Ways

@Alex Urezkov/Pexels.com

“My car payment is killing me.” “Do you know how much my rent costs?” “I can’t believe how expensive everything has gotten.” The conversation keeps circling back to their financial stress, and you start to feel less like a date and more like a potential solution to their problems.

Some people treat dating like a networking event for finding someone to subsidize their lifestyle. They’re not necessarily golddiggers in the traditional sense. They’re testing the waters to see if you’ll pick up tabs, cover expenses, or “help out” down the line. Your wallet interests them more than your personality.

7. You Feel Like You’re Being Interviewed

@Kampus Production/Pexels.com

Question after question after question. What do you do? Where do you live? What’s your five-year plan? Do you want kids? How much do you make? (Okay, maybe they don’t ask that one outright, but they’re definitely fishing for clues.) Meanwhile, they volunteer almost nothing about themselves.

Dates should feel like conversations, not interrogations. When someone treats the evening like they’re filling out a checklist of requirements, they’re not trying to get to know you. They’re trying to see if you fit their predetermined criteria. You’re being evaluated, not appreciated.

8. They Get Defensive About Completely Normal Questions

@Edmond Dantès/Pexels.com

You ask where they went to school, and they’re explaining why college “doesn’t even matter anymore” and how successful people they know never graduated. You mention their job, and they launch into a monologue about how they’re “between opportunities” because the industry has “changed so much.”

People who feel good about their choices can talk about them without turning everything into a debate. When your date treats basic small talk like you attacked their entire existence, they’re probably sitting on a pile of shame or regret they haven’t dealt with yet. That’s their therapy homework, not your first date problem.

9. They Can’t Stop Talking About How Busy They Are

@Christina Morillo/Pexels.com

“My schedule is absolutely insane right now.” “I barely have time to breathe.” “I don’t know how I even made time for this.” Congratulations? You want a medal for having a calendar?

People who can’t shut up about how busy they are want you to think they’re important, and they want a get-out-of-jail-free card for being flaky later. They’re setting you up. When they cancel plans or take three days to text back, you can’t get mad because they already told you their life is “crazy.” How convenient.

10. They Drop Names Like They’re Getting Paid for It

A woman holding a cup while looking out a window.
@Sora Shimazaki/Pexels.com

“My friend who works at Google thinks…” “I was telling my buddy who’s a doctor…” “My college roommate started a company and…” Every single story comes with credentials attached to people you’ve never met and will never meet.

They think hanging around successful people makes them special somehow. Like success is contagious if you stand close enough to it. What they’re really showing you is that they need constant proof they matter, and eventually, you’ll become another accessory they parade around to feel better about themselves.

11. They Make Everything a Competition

A man sitting across from a woman and talking.
@Katerina Holmes/Pexels.com

You mention you ran a 5K last month, and they counter with how they “used to run marathons” before their knee injury. You talk about a trip you took, and they one-up you with a “better” destination they visited. Every single thing you share gets matched or exceeded by their story.

They can’t let anyone else have a moment. They need to be the most interesting, most accomplished, most experienced person at the table. Date someone like this and you’ll never get to be excited about anything without them swooping in to make it about themselves instead.

12. You Catch Them in Small Lies That Don’t Even Matter

A woman sitting at an outdoor café table with a drink.
@Bethany Ferr/Pexels.com

They said they’d never been to this restaurant, but then mentioned “last time” they were here. They claimed they don’t drink much, but this is their third cocktail. These lies don’t even serve a purpose, which makes them weirder than if they did.

People who lie about nothing have been doing it so long that they can’t stop. They’ve built so many different versions of themselves that the truth gets lost in the mix. If they’ll lie when it doesn’t matter, what happens when it does? You already know the answer.

13. They Fish for Compliments the Entire Time

A woman sitting at a table holding a cup.
@Liza Summer/Pexels.com

“I probably talk too much, don’t I?” “You must think I’m so awkward.” “I bet you’ve been on way better dates than this.” They’re lobbing softballs at you and waiting for you to knock them out of the park with praise and reassurance.

They want you to manage their feelings before you’ve even decided if you like them. They’re testing whether you’ll be their emotional support human who tells them they’re amazing every five minutes. Say yes to date two, and congratulations, you’ve signed up for a full-time unpaid position as their personal cheerleader.

14. They Talk Over You or Finish Your Sentences

A woman with curly hair looking forward.
@Ron Lach/Pexels.com

You start to tell a story, and they interrupt with their version of how it probably went. You’re explaining something, and they cut you off to add their opinion. Or worse, they finish your sentences like they already know what you’re going to say (they don’t).

They think their thoughts matter more than yours. They can’t be bothered to wait for you to finish a complete sentence because whatever they have to say feels more urgent, more interesting, more important. People who won’t let you talk on date one definitely won’t start listening better on date twenty.

15. They Act Completely Different Around Other People

@www.kaboompics.com/Pexels.com

A friend of theirs stops by the table, and your date transforms into someone else entirely. Their laugh changes, their posture shifts, even the way they talk sounds different. Then the friend leaves, and the original person returns like nothing happened.

They’re performing for everyone, including you. You’re not seeing the real them because they don’t show that person to anyone. They’ve created so many different versions of themselves for different audiences that whoever they actually are has gotten lost somewhere in the costume changes.
