Why Some People Stop Dressing Well After They Get Into a Relationship

There is one complaint that almost no one wants to voice out loud in any relationship, and it is about how one partner, who was so conscientious and scrupulous about their style and fashion, suddenly stops caring all of a sudden. Usually this happens when the relationship is going well and things are settling down into comfort and utter familiarity. It causes some to drop all effort and intention and let their choice of attire follow suit. Gone are the considered and meditated decisions regarding stylish outfits, only for the latter to be replaced by tousled hair, old sweatpants, shorts, and so on. The grooming routine disappears, and late-night dates become increasingly rare. So, what causes this change? Read on and learn about the answers right here.

The Courtship Phase Encourages Effort

During the earlier days of dating, appearance plays a major role. It is imperative that both partners show each other that they are willing to put in the effort and work necessary to make things work. This is what leads them to consider meticulously what to wear, how to groom themselves, and take all the pertinent decisions needed to present the best and most polished version of themselves to each other. That is human nature, to go the extra mile and do anything to ensure that they make the relationship last. Once the latter is secure, that motivation directed at keeping up with the best and appropriate fashion trends dissipates.

Comfort Becomes More Important

One of the most attractive benefits of a reliable and long-lasting relationship is the ability to simply kick back and relax without any reservations or hesitation, if not the most attractive. Many people eventually reach a point in their relationship where they no longer have to worry about their appearance or how they look to their partner. They can be their completely unfiltered and uncurated selves around them because they know that they are loved and won’t be judged for it. That applies to their choice of attire as well because they are no longer looking to or have to impress each other or secure their affection any longer. But there is a thin and precarious line that separates comfort from utter neglect, a lesson many couples learn too late.

The Effort Shifts Elsewhere

When it comes to some couples, the effort doesn’t vanish; it simply gets siphoned into some other avenues or modes. Where some people initially emphasized their clothing and fashion choices, they now redirect their attention and energies into other, more significant pursuits, like building a family, raising children, working on their careers, and so on. These couples are still focusing on making things work and enhancing their bond, just in other ways, ones that don’t entail them standing in front of the closet, contemplating what to wear anymore.

Familiarity Reduces Self-Awareness

Human beings have a strange propensity to gradually mitigate the level of attention that they extend towards things that they view and come across every day. Psychologists call this the familiarity effect, which states that the more human beings become accustomed to something, the less likely they are to notice it consciously. The same thing can occur in relationships where people might stop seeing themselves through their partner’s perspective. This causes them to become less cognizant about how their appearance influences attraction. As a result, they stop making choices that lead them to dress appropriately and mindfully unconsciously.

Some People Believe Attraction Shouldn’t Require Effort

There are some people who adamantly subscribe to the notion that they shouldn’t be forced to dress effectively or uphold the standards of fashion just to feel secure in their relationship. They opine that true love shouldn’t be predicated on making oneself appear attractive and stylish. They want to be accepted just the way they are, inclusive of their choice of attire. For them, this acts as the ultimate and definitive test within their relationship, one that corroborates that their relationship is genuine and strong.

Social Media May Be Raising Expectations

The older generations didn’t have to contend with the egregious challenge that is social media. The latter constantly causes partners to become agitated and be plagued by feelings of inadequacy when they compare themselves to highly curated and polished versions of stylish couples that they see online. Consequently, some people might feel coerced to maintain a polished and unblemished version of themselves indefinitely. But there are some who reject these demands from social media altogether. These are the ones who have it better, not being weighed down by unnecessary expectations generated from social media and pretentious fashion.

The Real Issue Isn’t Usually Fashion

Arguments about fashion and clothing might ostensibly appear shallow at the first glance. But in truth, these arguments usually signal something deeper. When people express their opinions regarding their partners and how they wish they would dress better, they are actually expressing their desire to feel seen, valued, desired, and appreciated. Similarly, when a person opposes altering their style, they might actually be protecting their comfort, individuality, and autonomy. Clothes rarely have anything to do with the disagreements that these couples are facing.

Finding the Middle Ground

The healthiest couples are the ones who eschew going to extreme scenarios and instead try to achieve equilibrium in this regard. They try to make an effort in looking good from time to time and don’t let intention and style vanish completely from their lives. They understand the importance of looking good for their partner and strive to remain attractive in a comfortable and balanced manner.
