Tentree makes high-quality clothing, and they’re extremely ethical. Overall, they’re a great brand.

About Tentree

Tentree had it’s humble beginning in 2011 when Kalen Emsley and David Luba had the idea to start a clothing brand that “gave back to the Earth.” They brought Kalen’s brother Derrick Emsley on board as the CEO.

Their first office was in Kalen’s basement in Regina, Saskatchewan, but after appearing on The Dragon’s Den, they received enough funding to take Tentree to the next level.

If you want the full story, there’s a great blog post about it on the Tentree site.

For every item purchased we plant ten trees, in an effort to regenerate ecosystems, capture carbon and provide planting jobs in communities around the world. All our products are created with an Earth-First approach, meaning they’re made in fair, safe working conditions, and constructed using only sustainably sourced and recycled materials.

From Tentree’s About Page

In case you’re wondering about the name, it’s kind of a literal meaning. For every item purchased, Tentree plants ten trees. As of July 2022, they’ve planted more than 81 million trees, and their goal is to plant 1 billion by 2030.

To take their environmental efforts even further, they’ve launched Climate Plus, which is a subscription service that helps people offset their carbon footprint.

Basically, you can fund the planting of a certain number of trees each month, and the trees help reduce carbon in the atmosphere. Therefore, you’re at least offsetting the amount of carbon that your lifestyle produces.

Needless to say, Tentree is an extremely ethical company. Now we’ll discuss their products.

My Build

For reference, I’m 6’1″ and 170lbs. I have a 37″ chest and usually wear Large tops. My ideal pants size is 32×32.

What I Tried

These are the products I tried:

  • Ottoman Classic T-Shirt
  • InMotion T-Shirt
  • Destination Agility Short Light
  • Destination Pant

Here’s my hands-on review of each product.

Ottoman Classic T-Shirt

The Ottoman Classic T-Shirt is a ribbed shirt made of a cotton and polyester blend. The ribbed texture looks really interesting, but I don’t think it’s very comfortable. It feels scratchier than a regular t-shirt.

It’s also not a very light tee, so it’d be better suited for wearing in early spring or layering with in fall and winter rather than wearing in the summer.

It’s kind of a tight-fitting shirt overall, and the collar is a little too tight. Sizing up would be a good idea.

Overall, the Ottoman looks cool, but I feel like they chose form over function.

InMotion T-Shirt

If you’re looking for an athletic tee, the InMotion shirt is great. It’s a pretty standard moisture-wicking t-shirt that has a nice stretch to it.

Tentree definitely combined function and form with this shirt, as it’s great for workouts and looks stylish enough to hang out at home or run errands in.

Destination Agility Short Light

I tried the Destination Agility Short Light, and I absolutely love them. They’re nice, stretchy shorts that look stylish too.

I’ve been wearing them for all kinds of activities. Walking, running, yoga, hanging out, running errands, etc.

A bonus is that they’re made from recycled water bottles.

One downside of these shorts is that they only come in a 10″ inseam. That’s simply too long of an inseam for a lot of guys.

They fit my legs pretty well, but I’d prefer a slightly shorter inseam, like 9″. A 7″ option would also be great as it’d be a nice middle ground between shorter inseams (like 5″) and longer inseams (like 10″).

Destination Pant

Similar to the Destination Agility Short Light, the Destination Pant is a versatile garment that can be used for exercise or casual wear.

For me, the style of them isn’t something I gravitate towards, but I have no complaints about the quality.

They’re comfortable, durable, have a lot of pockets, and they’re water resistant! If you’re looking for a comfortable pair of pants that have a slight stretch to them, the Destination Pant is worth trying.

One complaint about the fit is that, similar to the shorts; there are no options for different inseam lengths.

FAQs About Tentree

Here are the answers to some common questions about Tentree.

Is Tentree a Canadian Company?

Yep, Tentree started in Regina, Saskatchewan, and is now headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Who Owns Tentree?

Tentree is owned by Kalen Emsley, David Luba and Derrick Emsley.

What Is Tentree’s Mission?

To sum it up, Tentree’s mission is to give back to the Earth and to plant 1 billion trees by the year 2030.

My Recommendation

Tentree has a great set of ethics, and they make high-quality clothes. My only big complaint with their products is that the shorts and pants could really benefit from multiple inseam length options.

Hopefully, this review will help you decide whether you want to try their products or not!

About Ryan Hallstrom

TMM's Senior Editor, Ryan Hallstrom is from Horseheads, NY, the only town in America named in honor of military packhorses. When he’s not writing about menswear, Ryan enjoys reading, whittling, running, and perfecting his penmanship.

Background: In 2021, Ryan graduated from Brigham Young University where he majored in American Studies and Russian. Before completing his schooling, he had a wide range of job titles including finish carpenter, usher, elevator operator (yes, that’s a real job), landscaper, tour guide, and more.

In January 2022, Ryan began working full-time as The Modest Man’s Senior Editor. In this role, he not only edits all articles prior to publication but also is a frequent contributor to the blog. He enjoys crafting in-depth product reviews (often testing items in extreme environments), helpful self-improvement articles, and detailed clothing guides.

His interest in men’s style stems from the examples of men in his family:

“Growing up, a lot of the men I looked up to dressed well. My dad is always clean-shaven and makes sure that he looks presentable before heading out the door, and my grandfather, who owned and operated a dairy farm, usually wore work pants with a sharp crease and a button-up work shirt.”

However, it wasn’t until the end of high school that Ryan began to care about how he looked. Gradually, over the next few years, he started to dress better and learn about style. “Finding clothes that fit helped me to become more confident. I find that when I try to dress well, I feel better.”

Expertise: Ryan has loved writing since an early age, and in college began contributing to and editing for university publications. After college, he began freelance writing and editing. He’s written from blogs and magazines such as Real Men Real Style, Life in the Finger Lakes, and Gentleman Within.

An avid traveler who spends plenty of time outdoors, Ryan appreciates clothes, footwear and accessories that can take a beating. His reviews often include long-term, thorough testing in extreme weather conditions.

Ryan has also spent more time in a suit and tie than most guys, so he's well qualified to write about classic menswear, business casual and formalwear.
