Don’t Weaponize Silence

Silence is great for rumination and even healing, but it becomes deeply detrimental when used for punishment in a relationship. The silent treatment might seem like a great idea, but in reality it is nothing more than an immature and asinine attempt that reeks of petulance. It is better to communicate rather than sulk in silence for the betterment of the relationship.

Don’t Compete with Your Partner

A relationship thrives when it is based on mutual respect and teamwork. Your partner is your collaborator, teammate, and confidant. You are to support them, not engage in a competition with them. Respect, validation, and attachment are generated by teamwork, while competition between partners diminishes them.

Don’t Let Others Interfere in Your Issues

There are certain private issues that couples need to discuss and sort amongst themselves. They don’t need to be telegraphed or shared with outsiders who have nothing to do with the relationship. They might be family, friends, or any other close relatives, but for couples who want to save their bond, involving them into their private affairs should be definite no-no.

Don’t Keep Score

Love isn’t something that you need to measure in numbers. You don’t have to constantly keep track of who contributed what how many times in the relationship. You should give in the relationship because you want to and not let love turn into obligation. The same goes for your partner. You should both collaborate and not tally what you both bring to the table.

Don’t Intrude on Each Other’s Alone Time

Both partners in a relationship should realize that they need personal space and solitary time. It allows them to engage in pursuits that bring them peace and revitalize them. This is imperative for recharging and bringing back a positive energy to the relationship. That is why partners in a relationship should accord each other this alone time when needed.

Don’t Dismiss Your Partner’s Feelings

Your relationship is supposed to be an oasis in the desert that is this arduous life. Your partner should rest assured that you will support them and won’t belittle or dismiss their feelings. You and the relationship should be a source of peace for them, not unwanted consternation or anxiety.

Dont Bring Up Past Mistakes

The past is the past, and that is where all of the indiscretions committed by each partner should lie. Never ever bring up past mistakes or incidents as a means for denigrating or bringing your partner low. It shows immaturity and an inability to let go of the past, tendencies that can destroy a relationship if left unchecked.

Don’t Exploit Their Vulnerabilities

Your partner must have shared some of their weaknesses with you in strict confidence, never to be shared with anyone else. It is when you start using them to denigrate them or make fun of them that things start going downhill. Never ever use your partner’s vulnerabilities as a means for mocking them. It will destroy your relationship, and there won’t be anything left to salvage afterwards.

Don’t Ever Speak Bad about Each Other in Front of Others

You are responsible for protecting your partner’s honor and dignity in public. Never ever speak badly about your partner in front of others. Instead, praise and speak well of them in front of others. It will enhance the love in your relationship and make it truly lasting.

Don’t Compare Them to Others

Comparisons destroy confidence soundly in a relationship. When your partner sees you making these comparisons, they become anxious and lose all confidence in the relationship. They begin to see themselves as inadequate and might even fall out of love with you.

Don’t Leave Arguments

It is incredibly insulting for a person when their partner leaves them abruptly in the middle of an argument. It signals to them that they are not deserving of any attention or focus and don’t consider the relationship important enough to warrant your presence. It leads them to doubt your commitment. Arguments need to be discussed, dissected, and meticulously resolved for the betterment of both parties.

Don’t Ever Stop Showing Appreciation

Small gestures and acts of kindness can become lost in routine, but truly powerful relationships never cease with these shows of appreciation. Partners in these relationships know that the best way to maintain cohesion and love is to remain appreciative of each other. They never stop praising each other and always remain respectful.

Don’t Let Private Things Slip

Private messages, intimate moments, personal details, and more are all just that: incredibly private. Never ever commit any indiscretion that might leak them to others. Both partners are responsible for protecting each other’s privacy; the integrity of their relationship depends on it.

Don’t Expect Them to be Mind Readers

No matter how long you both have known each other, you still can’t claim to know about the inner workings of your partner’s mind. You shouldn’t expect each other to be mind readers and instead communicate openly and honestly about what is on your mind. It prevents resentment from setting into the relationship and keeps it regulated and strong.

Don’t Stop Flirting

The strongest relationship is one where both partners take the time and effort to flirt with each other. They remain playful, tease each other, and do everything to make their partner feel desirable. This is the kind of energy that keeps the relationship going long after novelty, or the honeymoon phase, has ended.

Don’t Forget You are Both Human

Perfection isn’t attainable, nor should it be expected of a relationship. After all, you are both humans and should give each other the benefit of the doubt and leeway that being so deserves. Mistakes will undoubtedly happen, but you will be able to overcome them with effort, grace, and patience abound.

Final Thoughts

It isn’t rigid rules but rather constant respect, flexibility, and a willingness to keep loving each other every day that keeps a relationship strong and sustainable. These mistakes bring the contrary effect into the relationship, and that is why every effort should be made to eschew them.
