18 Phrases People Use When They’re Softly Rejecting Someone

Updated on December 1, 2025 by TMM Staff · Dating & Confidence

Not every rejection comes with a clear “no.” Most people prefer to ease out of a situation gently–especially when they don’t want to hurt feelings or cause conflict. That’s when the “soft rejection” comes into play: vague replies, slow responses, nervous laughter, and words that technically sound polite… but quietly mean “I’m not interested.” Understanding these phrases helps you read the room, protect your confidence, and move on faster instead of hanging on to false hope.

  • 18. “Let’s just keep things chill.”

Here’s what people really mean when they say certain things–and how to know when to stop trying.

1. “Let me get back to you.”

This phrase buys time–not because they’re busy, but because they don’t want to commit. It sounds polite, but there’s usually no “getting back” that follows. Most people use it when they’re hoping you’ll forget about the question altogether. If you’ve already heard this more than once, that’s your sign. Instead of chasing a reply, give them space. If they’re interested, they’ll find their way back without being reminded. Interest doesn’t need follow-ups.

2. “I’ve just been really busy lately.”

Everyone is busy–but when someone wants to see you, they make time. This line usually signals that they don’t want more interaction, but they don’t want to appear rude about it either. They’re setting an emotional boundary without spelling it out. If weeks go by and they stay “busy,” take it as a cue to move on gracefully. Time reveals interest faster than words ever will.

3. “That sounds fun! Maybe another time.”

“Maybe” is often a soft “no” wrapped in optimism. It leaves the door slightly open–but just enough for them to keep their options without saying yes. Occasionally, they do mean it… but only if they follow up with a real plan. The best way to read this? Respect the response, step back, and wait. Someone truly interested won’t leave things floating in the air forever–they’ll anchor plans in reality.

4. “I don’t really know what I want right now.”

This sounds deep and vulnerable, but often, it’s a way of saying, “I’m not choosing you.” When someone is unsure but values having you around, they’ll keep you in emotional limbo–close enough to be convenient but far enough to keep their freedom. People who genuinely care about your feelings won’t keep you confused. They’ll clarify their intentions. So when you hear this line, listen carefully and protect your heart.

5. “Let’s just see how things go.”

This phrase feels hopeful, but it actually removes commitment from the equation. It’s vague and safe–letting them enjoy attention without giving any guarantees. They’re leaving the future up to chance because they’re unsure (or uninterested). Don’t invest in “seeing how things go” unless effort goes both ways. Relationships shouldn’t feel like waiting rooms.

6. “You deserve someone great.”

It sounds flattering, even noble–but it often means: That great person isn’t me. This phrase allows them to step back while still appearing kind. They’re trying to protect your feelings while protecting their boundaries at the same time. The best response is to accept it at face value and move forward. Yes, you do deserve someone great–and you don’t need to chase them to find that person.

7. “I don’t want to ruin our friendship.”

This is one of the clearest soft rejections–they’re telling you they value your presence, but not romantically. Most people think saying this will soften the blow, but it actually sets a very firm boundary. If you push past it, things will usually get awkward. If they truly wanted to date you, they wouldn’t be too worried about the friendship–they’d risk it. The fact that they won’t tells you everything.

8. “Let’s play it by ear.”

This phrase often means they don’t want to plan–because commitment feels uncomfortable. It gives them flexibility to disappear if something (or someone) more appealing pops up. Healthy interest includes effort and follow-through. If you always initiate and they always “play it by ear,” you’re not the priority. You’re just an option. And that’s not where anyone should stay.

9. “I’m not looking for anything serious.”

This one seems honest–and sometimes it is–but it can also be code for “I’m comfortable keeping things casual because I don’t see a long-term future here.” Listen to it carefully. People sometimes hope this means “maybe they’ll change their mind,” but the reality is the opposite: believe the first answer. If your goals don’t align, don’t try to force compatibility. It never ends well.

10. “You’re such a good person.”

Compliments like this feel reassuring–but they can also be used to pad a rejection. It’s a way of acknowledging your effort while creating emotional distance. Look at follow-through, not flattery. Someone who truly sees you as special won’t keep you in a place of uncertainty. Good people deserve clarity–not confusion disguised as kindness.

11. “I’m just focusing on myself right now.”

Self-growth is important, but this phrase is often used as a shield to avoid committing. They may very well be focusing on themselves–but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a deeper layer underneath. What they’re really saying is that what you’re offering doesn’t fit into their current picture. Take it as a sign to focus on your growth too. Don’t wait in the background for someone else’s timing.

12. “I’m not ready for this.”

It’s a careful way of stepping back without closing the door completely. But if someone repeatedly isn’t “ready,” it means they’re not willing–at least not with you. Readiness isn’t just about time–it’s about who inspires it. If they don’t feel prepared to move forward with you specifically, that may not change. Don’t wait for a version of them that may never appear.

13. “Let’s take things slow.”

Sometimes this is healthy–but often, it’s a way to emotionally stall while enjoying the benefits of your presence. If “slow” turns into months of uncertainty, it’s no longer cautious–it’s comfortable avoidance. You can respect the pace while still expecting clarity. Ask yourself: are things moving forward… or are they just staying still?

14. “I really value your company.”

Sounds sweet–but emotionally, it usually translates into “I like your presence, not necessarily a deeper connection.” They enjoy your attention but may not reciprocate the way you hope. Don’t let flattery blind you to patterns. If your effort is constant and theirs is inconsistent, you already have your answer. Value your time enough to walk away when things stay one-sided.

15. “I don’t think I’m good for you.”

This may come across as humility, but it’s often a pre-exit statement. They sense you’re invested–and this is their way of lowering expectations before pulling back. They might feel guilty, unsure, or simply uninterested–but either way, that’s not your problem to fix. Believe them the first time. If someone sees themselves as a warning sign, take it seriously.

16. “You’ll find someone better.”

It usually means: I won’t be that person. They’re pushing you forward because they don’t want to be part of your future. It’s a kind rejection dressed as encouragement. Stay graceful, but don’t linger. The best thing you can do is accept their words–and start living like you’ve already let go.

17. “I’m not in the right headspace.”

Mental space matters–but sometimes this phrase is used broadly to avoid emotional responsibility. It’s their way of softening the rejection while keeping you at arm’s length. The truth? You should never wait for someone to become “ready” if they aren’t showing signs of wanting to grow with you. Readiness isn’t about perfect timing–it’s about aligned intentions.

18. “Let’s just keep things chill.”

This is their way of saying: I don’t want to invest more than this. It keeps the situation casual and gives them room to back out anytime. If that aligns with your expectations, fine–but if your heart is asking for more, don’t settle for half-effort connection. Chemistry is exciting, but clarity is peace. Don’t trade peace for possibility.
