Men, If You Want a Stronger Marriage, You Need to Stop Doing These 18 Things NOW

Updated on November 12, 2025 by TMM Staff · Dating & Confidence

You may not have noticed it, but as the years piled up, you started getting a little… complacent. Somewhere between work stress, diaper changes, and Netflix binges, a lot of guys start phoning it in. The spark fades, the laughs get rarer, and things start feeling dull.

Here’s the thing: it’s not about flowers or fancy date nights (though those don’t hurt). It’s about how you show up every day. So if you actually want a stronger marriage, not a “we’re surviving” one, stop doing these 18 things right now.

1. Laugh Together Often

If the last time you two cracked up over something stupid feels like forever ago, that’s a problem. Laughter is the glue that holds everything together. When humor is alive in a marriage, almost anything can be handled.

Make fun of yourselves. Tell that story that always makes her snort-laugh. Watch ridiculous movies. Dance like a fool in the kitchen. Life is serious enough, so keep your marriage light.

2. Treat Intimacy as a Means to Connect With Her

If your idea of romance is a quick pat on the butt before bed and a “you good?”, buddy, no. Intimacy isn’t a task to complete. It’s communication without words. She wants to feel desired, not scheduled.

Slow things down. Look her in the eyes. Flirt like you did back when everything was new. Real closeness starts emotionally before it ever turns physical. When she feels seen, everything else falls into place.

3. Keep Growing and Improving Yourself

If all your best stories are from ten years ago, it’s time to evolve. Growth keeps both of you engaged and curious.

Go to the gym. Learn something new. Try something outside your comfort zone. Every time you challenge yourself, you bring fresh energy into the relationship.

4. Communicate Your Needs Clearly

Hinting gets you nowhere. Grunting even less. If something’s off, say it. Out loud. Using actual words.

She can’t read minds, and making her guess only adds frustration. Speak with honesty, not attitude. Saying, â€śI need more time with you,” does more good than sitting in silence pretending everything’s fine.

5. Keep Your Marriage a Priority Even with Kids

Kids demand time, but your marriage deserves it too. When you stop feeding it, it starts to fade.

Forget waiting for the perfect moment for date nights because that moment never comes. Make it happen anyway. The best gift you can give your children is showing them what a loving partnership looks like. That starts with putting each other first.

6. Speak to Her with Respect Always

Tone can make or break a moment. The difference between talking and talking down is massive.

Even during heated moments, never turn her into your outlet for frustration. Sarcasm might win a second, but it costs trust. Speak like a man who values his wife, even when the topic’s tough.

7. Let Go of Old Grudges

Dragging the past into every argument kills progress. If you forgive her, mean it. If you haven’t, say so and deal with it.

Replaying old fights turns new ones into reruns. Let those stories end. You’re trying to build something better, so let go of what hurt you and move on gracefully.

8. Celebrate Her Wins Big or Small

Whether she crushed a big project or finally mastered that recipe she’s been chasing, celebrate it.

Be her loudest fan. When you celebrate her the way you did when you first met, she feels seen and appreciated. Let her know, “I’m proud of you.” That message lands deeper than you think.

9. Drop the “Tough Guy” Act

Being made of stone doesn’t make you strong. Real courage looks like honesty. Tell her when you’re scared, tired, or lost.

True strength lives in vulnerability. The act might keep your pride intact, but it builds walls. Let her see the man behind the armor. That’s where real intimacy begins.

10. Validate Her Feelings Instead of Dismissing Them

When she opens up, resist the urge to fix everything right away. Sometimes she wants you to just understand what she feels.

Try saying, â€śThat sounds hard,” or â€śI’d feel that way too.” You’re showing empathy to your spouse, and that one skill changes everything.

11. Don’t Use Work as an Escape

Work matters, but when it becomes the place you hide, your relationship pays the price.

Being “the provider” means nothing if she feels invisible in your world. Close the laptop. Leave the phone in another room. Be fully home, not half-present. Your job won’t hold your hand at night.

12. Share the Load at Home

Waiting for her to “ask for help” misses the point completely. It’s your home too.

See what needs attention and handle it. Laundry, dishes, bedtime routines. take initiative. Do your part and don’t wait for her to act on the things you can already do at home.

13. Quit Comparing Her to Other Women

Instead of looking for what’s wrong, why not appreciate what’s unique about her? Compliment her often. She picked you for a reason, so treat her like that means something.

14. Face Difficult Conversations Together

Ignoring hard talks doesn’t make them disappear. It makes them grow teeth.

Whatever the issue may be, money, family, or feelings, address it side by side. It’s all about working through things as partners. Real men handle discomfort instead of hiding from it.

15. Show Affection Every Day

Physical closeness shouldn’t vanish after the honeymoon phase. Touch her hand. Kiss her forehead. Pull her close when she walks by.

Affection says, “You matter,” without a single word. Small, steady gestures remind her she’s still the person you choose daily.

16. Be Fully Present When She Speaks

Scrolling your phone while she’s talking sends one loud message: â€śWhat you’re saying isn’t important.” Harsh but true.

Set distractions aside. Look her in the eye. Listen like it’s the most interesting thing you’ve heard all day. That simple habit rebuilds trust faster than any apology.

17. Don’t Sweat or Ignore the Small Acts of Kindness

When she brings you coffee, folds your shirt, or leaves a note, notice it. Those moments matter.

A quick thank-you goes further than silence ever will. Noticing effort shows appreciation. Ignoring it says you’ve stopped paying attention. Guess which one lasts.

18. Stop Trying to Win Every Argument

Marriage isn’t a sport. Every time one person “wins,” both lose.

Drop the ego and focus on understanding. Sometimes the strongest thing you can say is, â€śYou’re right. I messed that up.” That kind of humility keeps love alive longer than pride ever could.
