It’s important to know why you want a FWB arrangement. Is it because you’re afraid of commitment? Are you avoiding loneliness? Or do you have the need to prove that “you still got it.” Having the clarity of what you’re looking for helps you set boundaries to keep things uncomplicated. It also helps you choose the right partner who understands the set up. Knowing your “why” helps you stay in control and avoid misunderstandings.

Choose The Right Partner

Choose the right partner who aligns with your expectations. If you’re looking for casual sex, avoid choosing someone who secretly hopes for more. She should be able to understand the nature of the relationship and its boundaries. It’s best to avoid someone in your social circle as it’s too risky and might disrupt your reputation.

No To Daytime Conversational Text

It’s casual sex. No need for random check-ins throughout the day. Avoid texting “How’s your day?” or “I miss you.” These conversational texts mimic relationship behavior which could lead to attachment. It’s the last thing you want to happen in a casual relationship. It also sends mixed signals that might confuse the other party.

Be Clear On The Sleep Over Boundaries

It can happen, but it’s not expected. However, it’s best not to have sleep overs as it can be intimate. You could be emotionally attached if you get used to sleeping and waking up next to you FWB. It just adds confusion that can make your relationship messy. It blurs the line between casual and emotional.

Don’t Plan Anything Romantic

Keep everything simple. Just casual hookup and no romantic dates. Don’t plan anything romantic as it can just complicate things. Avoid giving gifts, flowers, or setting up romantic dinners as it can send mixed signals. Romantic gestures suggest deeper intentions that FWB is not about. It can stir up feelings and can lead to expectations. In the beginning of the relationship, make it clear that there should be no romantic stuff involved.

Be Clear That You’re Not Looking For A Wife

If you’re on dating apps, it’s best to clarify what you are looking for in your dating bio. Say, “I’m not looking for anything serious right now. I’m into casual and fun vibes.” It suggests that you’re here for connection, not commitment. It also sets the tone in your relationship. Being clear on what you’re looking for also allows you to attract women who align with your lifestyle.

No Drama

You’ve got enough going on in your life at 40. Drama from a casual setup will just make your life more complicated. Also, you have a reputation to protect. You don’t want drama from this setup ruin the life you built. To avoid chaos, set boundaries early on the relationship. Communicate clearly on your rules for your FWB set up. If there’s something you don’t like, address it carefully.

The 72 Hour Rule

If you’ve never heard about the 72-hour rule, it’s avoiding planning things 72 hour prior hookup. It prevents confusion and getting attached. Constant contact mimics relationship behavior that could lead to confusion and unmet expectations. At this age, it’s easy to get emotionally attached, so it’s important not to do things that blur the lines between casual and romance.

Consent Should Be Ongoing

Since it’s casual sex, there’s no depth in your relationship so you don’t know each other’s preferences in intimacy. It can be a cause of miscommunication so it’s best to communicate what’s okay and what’s not. If there’s something you don’t like, say stop. Also, it doesn’t mean that if it’s okay one time, you’re always up for it. It’s best to keep communication open and respectful during intimacy. You can say something along the lines of “Are you okay with this?”

Don’t Introduce Them To Your Kids

You’re not in a romantic relationship, neither are you looking for a long-term partner. It will just get messy if you introduce them to your kids. It can build impactful connections that might lead to false hopes. Also, introducing your kids to someone who’s not permanent in your life can leave them feeling confused or jealous. They might also become attached to your FWB, and it’s the last thing you want to do.

Speak Your Mind

At 40, you know yourself better. You’ve learned what turns you on and not. There’s no room for pretensions. Be vocal on what you like and what you don’t like. Encourage your partner to share her turn-ons and fantasies. Open sexual communication allows you to experiment and enjoy. Speaking your mind isn’t just about having satisfying sex, but also creating a respectful and safe space for both of you.

Keep It Private

No meeting the parents or friends since it implies a relationship. Just keep the connection between you and your FWB. You don’t want people talking about you because once they gossip, it creates drama. Both of you have reputations to protect.

Be Respectful If One Falls For The Other

In set ups like this, if the boundaries are not set, it’s likely that one can catch feelings for the other, especially if she’s emotionally vulnerable. It’s a human response. However, once this happens, you need to address it immediately because it’s not what you agreed on in the first place. If she falls for you, listen to her feelings and reflect whether things have shifted for you, too. If your priorities don’t align anymore, exit gracefully. Do not pull away without explanation.

Know When To End It

This kind of setup isn’t meant to last forever. It must end at some point. One reason it could end is that your expectations no longer align. She might want more than you don’t want any of it. Another reason is that it’s not fun anymore. End it respectfully. Say along the lines of, “I really enjoyed this, but I think it’s time to close this chapter.”

End It With Honesty and Kindness

When it’s time to wrap it up, do it clearly and respectfully. You’ve been through emotional highs and lows in your life, so you know how important closure is. Ending thighs respectfully can prevent emotional damage. Also, ending it with honesty and kindness protects your reputation. You don’t want to be talked about by everybody being a ghoster.
