19 Cheap Tactics Women Use to Control Men in Relationships

Updated on October 3, 2025 by TMM Staff · Dating & Confidence

Every relationship has its power plays, but some women lean on little tricks that steer things their way without looking like outright manipulation. A lot of them hide in the everyday conversations and quiet moments that most men won’t notice right away.

But give it enough time, and these habits start to creep in and give the woman more power over the relationship. They influence how you act, what you agree to, and even what you let slide. Once you see these things for what they truly are, you can’t unsee them.

1. Withholding Affection

When affection turns into a bargaining chip, things get messy. A kiss or a hug gets handed out when she’s happy and immediately pulled back when she wants to prove a point. That pattern leaves a guy chasing her approval instead of talking things out.

What makes it work is that it’s rarely obvious at first. One night, she’s curled up next to him on the couch, the next she’s sitting at the far end scrolling through her phone. The unspoken message hits harder than words.

2. Playing Up Guilt

Guilt is a cheap but effective lever. A woman might sigh about how much she’s sacrificing or throw in a line about him “relaxing while she’s doing everything.” Suddenly, he feels like he owes her.

The tricky part is that he starts doing things to make the guilt go away instead of because he wants to. That’s when the balance in the relationship starts tipping without either of them saying it out loud.

3. Controlling Money

Money can turn into a quiet form of leverage. She might nitpick his spending, call her own splurges “essentials,” or push to manage the budget so she controls the purse strings.

Even if both of them bring in good incomes, the power play shows up in who feels free to spend. Over time, he may start thinking twice before buying something he likes, just to avoid the argument.

4. Constantly Testing Loyalty

Some women like to set traps instead of asking questions straight up. They’ll throw out lines about other women, question his plans, or act hurt over harmless interactions to see if he “proves himself.”

That constant testing eats at trust. Instead of focusing on the relationship, the guy ends up playing defense, always trying to pass the next test.

5. Leveraging Jealousy

Jealousy is a classic control tactic. She might mention how some guy at work treats her “like a queen,” or laugh a little too much at another man’s joke just to see how he reacts.

The reaction she’s after is usually a change in his behavior. Maybe he stops hanging out with certain friends or avoids certain places, not because he wants to but because he’s worried about her response.

6. Playing the Victim

Some women flip arguments by framing themselves as the one who are always wronged. A small disagreement can blow up fast if she leans into tears or frustration until he backs down.

Once that pattern sets in, he starts letting things slide to avoid another blowup. It’s a quiet way to keep control without ever having to compromise.

7. Using Attention as a Reward

When attention feels like a prize you have to win, it changes the whole dynamic. She’s warm and chatty when things go her way, distant and dismissive when they don’t.

Pretty soon, he’s doing more and more to stay on her good side, not because it’s right or fair but because he’s chasing her approval. That’s not partnership anymore, that’s training.

8. Bringing Up the Past

Some people never let old mistakes die. She’ll drag up a month-old comment during a brand-new argument, throwing him off balance.

That tactic keeps him from feeling like he’s ever earned a clean slate. He ends up defending himself for things he thought were long settled.

9. Gaslighting His Reactions

Gaslighting can be as simple as acting like his feelings are ridiculous. She’ll say things like “you’re imagining it” or “you’re being dramatic,” cutting off the discussion before it starts.

After hearing that often enough, a guy starts doubting his own memory and instincts. It’s an easy way to steer arguments because it makes him question himself instead of her.

10. Comparing Him to Other Men

Some women drop comparisons to make their partner feel like he’s lagging behind. They’ll bring up a friend’s boyfriend who’s more romantic, more ambitious, or “actually listens.”

Hearing that over and over can push a man to chase a moving target. Instead of feeling supported, he’s stuck trying to measure up to someone else’s highlight reel.

11. Giving the Cold Shoulder

The cold shoulder is like a freeze-out. She stops texting back, barely says a word, or gives clipped replies until he cracks.

That silence can feel heavier than a fight. A lot of guys rush to apologize just to break it, even when they didn’t do anything wrong.

12. Playing Hard to Reach

Sometimes the control comes from acting too busy. She’ll take hours to answer a message or keep “forgetting” to make plans until he starts rearranging his schedule to fit hers.

That chase can be exhausting. It slowly shifts the relationship so that everything happens on her timeline.

13. Dismissing His Achievements

A cutting comment about his promotion or a laugh at his hobbies might sound like teasing, but it hits a nerve. Over time, it starts chipping away at his confidence.

Once he stops feeling good about his own wins, he’s easier to influence. He may start putting his energy where he thinks she’ll approve instead of where he actually wants to.

14. Flipping The Blame

Some women dodge accountability by flipping the argument. If he points out something she did, she’ll steer it back to his flaws.

That deflection keeps the focus off her behavior and puts him on defense. It’s an effective way to stall any real resolution.

15. Controlling the Social Circle

It starts small, with little digs about a friend or complaints about certain coworkers. Then it grows into guilt-tripping him whenever he makes plans without her.

Over time, he might start declining invites and spending less time with people who matter to him. That loss of outside support makes it even easier for her to steer his choices.

16. Overloading Him With Expectations

When someone expects constant attention, perfect memory for details, and endless patience, it wears the other person down. Some women do this to keep their partner focused on them.

Eventually, the man stops prioritizing his own needs. He’s too busy trying to keep up with what she wants.

17. Threatening to Leave

Dropping breakup threats in the middle of arguments can be a power move. She hints that she’ll walk out if he doesn’t agree or give in.

That threat keeps him on edge. Instead of standing his ground, he may give up what he wants to keep her from walking out the door.

18. Questioning His Priorities

A woman might question why he works late, why he sees certain friends, or why he spends time on his hobbies. The goal is to make him feel like he’s choosing wrong.

When that kind of pressure builds, he starts rearranging his life to keep the peace. Before long, his priorities revolve around what she wants.

19. Making Him Feel Indebted

Some women keep a running tally of everything they’ve “done for him” and pull it out when they want something. It makes him feel like he owes her a favor in return.

That sense of debt can push him into agreeing to things he doesn’t want. Over time, the relationship starts feeling like a scoreboard instead of a partnership.
