Avoiding Responsibilities

Marriage is a partnership. Your wife shouldn’t be just the one taking care of the kids, doing household chores, or managing the emotional load, just because you don’t feel like doing it. It can make her feel resentful towards you. It can make your wife feel alone. If you want to build a strong marriage, be there for her all the time. Check in regularly and ask your wife where you can help, and never ever forget to appreciate her.

DisrespectΒ

Mutual respect is non-negotiable in relationships. Respect means valuing each other’s feelings and thoughts, even if they’re different from yours. It means you’re honoring your wife’s boundaries and protecting their dignity. When there’s disrespect in marriage, the trust erodes. One example of disrespect is when you’re criticizing your wife in public. To encourage respect in your marriage, listen to your wife – not just what she says, but what she means. Value her thoughts and feelings.

Lack of AffectionΒ

Small gestures matter in marriages. It could be just kissing your wife before going to sleep or giving her β€œjust-because” flowers. Showing affection and making efforts, even the simplest ones, can keep your love alive. With the lack of affection, even the most stable marriages can feel cold. Your wife might grow distant, and your connection will slip away. To avoid this mistake, it’s best to make your wife feel loved and valued. Be there for her always, emotionally and physically.

Communication BreakdownΒ

Communication is the cornerstone of a healthy marriage. It strengthens trust and makes you both feel safe sharing parts of yourself with your partner.  Being emotionally safe with your partner deepens your connection. Without communication, everything in your marriage can fall apart. Communication isn’t just about talking, but truly hearing her words. Be gentle and kind when expressing your thoughts.

Lack of Physical Intimacy

Physical intimacy goes beyond sex. It’s the connection and comfort you feel between you and your partner. When there’s no connection between the two of you, physical intimacy becomes uncomfortable. Zero physical intimacy can lead to resentment and being emotionally distant. It’s important to make time for your wife and focus on creating meaningful moments. Make your wife feel that she’s desired, loved, and valued.

Failing To Appreciate

When you stop appreciating, it sends a message that you just see her as a role and makes her feel undervalued. β€œThank You” may sound simple, but it does great wonders for your marriage. Saying Thank You to your wife for doing the household chores and being there for you makes her feel valued and appreciated. Compliment her and let her know that you see her as a person, not just a part of the background.

Keeping Score

When you keep a tally of every mistake or every favor you’ve done for her, it makes love transactional. It kills intimacy and makes her feel resentment. Instead of competing about who sacrificed the most or who’s doing less, collaborate with her. Ask her what you can do to support her today. After all, love shouldn’t be 50/50. It’s 80 for you when she’s feeling 20. You must be willing to carry her when she’s unable to contribute equally.

Refusing To Grow

When you say, β€œThis is just how I am,” it damages your relationship with your wife. It means you are resisting change and avoiding self-reflection. It means you’re refusing to learn from your mistakes. When you ignore her feedback and refuse self-improvement, your wife might become frustrated and may outgrow the relationship. She might feel that while she’s evolving, you’ve become emotionally stagnant. One thing you can do to avoid this mistake is to listen to her feedback without being defensive.

Excessive Control

Trust is the foundation of a healthy marriage. When there’s a lack of trust, you become controlling. You might think you’re just protecting your marriage by always insisting on knowing where she is or having a say in everything she does, but the truth is, you are suffocating the relationship. It destroys her sense of self in the relationship and makes her feel resentment towards you. To avoid this, acknowledge your fears – fear of being hurt, or fear of being left alone. Work on addressing that fear and not projecting it on your wife. Also, encourage her growth by allowing her to pursue her passions or be with people who support her outside your relationship.

Financial SecrecyΒ

Financial secrecy is also a form of dishonesty that can kill trust in your marriage. Keeping a secret bank account or hiding debts or risky financial behavior are forms of betrayal. To avoid this, it’s important to have β€œmoney talks”, so you know you’re aligned with your financial goals as a couple. Make long-term financial goals as a team effort. Whether you’re saving to buy a house or going on a vacation, make it a shared goal, not a solo act.

Escalating Arguments

Conflicts are normal in relationships, but if you let every conversation explode into big arguments, it can ruin your marriage. When you resort to shouting at her instead of listening to how she feels, it breaks emotional safety. Instead of blaming and personal attacks, focus on finding a resolution. Don’t keep score. Rather, focus on the current issue and avoid citing past mistakes to gain leverage. Calm down and take time before you react to approach the situation with clarity and avoid saying things that can hurt your wife.

Excessive Screen Time

When you choose to watch TV all day long or be glued to your laptop rather than spending time with your wife, it makes her feel like she’s not your priority. You’d rather give more attention to the screens than make meaningful memories with your wife. It kills communication and makes her feel emotionally alone. To avoid it, set hard rules on screen time like β€œNo phones during meal time.” Make time for your wife and put your phone down while having a conversation. Ask her about her day and make her feel that you’re interested in her. This makes her feel valued and seen.

Comparing Your Wife to Other Women

Nothing makes her feel more insecure and inadequate than comparing her to another woman, most especially your exes. If you’re trying to argue that the comparison is just to encourage her to grow, it won’t do her good. It will just make your wife feel that she’s not enough. It makes her feel small and makes her question her value to you. Avoid comparing her to others, but instead, focus on her strengths and compliment her for who she is. Instead of wishing her to become someone she isn’t, support her in her goals.

Challenging Her Boundaries

You may not be realizing it until the damage has already been done, but you are disrespecting your wife’s boundaries. It could be as subtle as pushing her to talk when she’s not ready, snooping through her phone, or insisting on physical intimacy when she’s not feeling it. Doing these behaviors makes her feel unsafe and kills respect. Give her physical and emotional space when she needs it. Honor her limits, not challenge them.

Constant CriticismΒ

When you’re keen on pointing out what she didn’t do instead of appreciating and acknowledging her efforts, you’re not helping your wife grow. You are belittling her. Constant criticism makes her feel inadequate and small. It makes her feel resentment towards you. Instead of criticizing her, acknowledge the things she did well. If you want to offer feedback, use gentler and supportive language. The tone matters.
