As a teenager, I struggled to find t-shirts that I liked. I made do with hand-me-downs, thrift store finds, and department store basics. The problem was, as a slim, 5’6” guy with a short torso, almost all my tees were too long and too baggy.

Once and a while I’d find a shirt that fit from Walmart, Sears, or other brick-and-mortar shops in my small town. For the most part, though, off-the-rack tees are just too big for me.

When I was in college, I stopped by an Eddie Bauer shop to replace my favorite henley which had become completely threadbare (the henley was from Eddie Bauer). I found a pile of henleys and tried one on in the same size as my old shirt (small), just to find that it was way too big and long.

I asked a salesperson if they carried extra small sizes. She said they didn’t. I asked if they had a kid’s section. She said they didn’t.

Another clerk chimed in, “Have you tried pasta?”

“Huh?”

“Pasta! You know — to get bigger!”

I thought this was hilarious because I was 24, and at that point, all the pasta in Italy couldn’t help me grow taller.

My not-so-tall family members have had similar impolite comments from salespeople when shopping for clothes.

After years of searching for a reliable source for short tops, I finally found UNIQLO after reading an article on The Modest Man. I decided to try UNIQLO’s short-length tees for myself.

I have to say, I was impressed. At long last, a t-shirt that’s short enough for me and that fits my build!

Quick Take

UNIQLO Supima Cotton Crew Neck Short-Sleeve Short Length T-Shirt is one of the best and only tee options for men of modest height.

I’d highly recommend trying out a UNIQLO short-sleeve tee!

Fit

Like most fast-fashion brands, the fit of UNIQLO’s clothes, even basics like tees, can vary from season to season and year to year.

I bought my tees a few years ago, but, as looser silhouettes are trending, I imagine the fit of UNIQLO’s tees is somewhat looser these days.

My tees are quite fitted on my 5’6”, 145-pound frame. That said, they’re not too tight, and definitely not baggy.

The fit is pretty good, but I feel like tees from Buck Mason and Ruler of London fit me better.

When I ordered my tees, I also ordered a pique polo from UNIQLO in XS. The polo fits better than the tees, but that may be because the pique cotton fabric is somewhat thicker and drapes better.

Overall though, I’m happy with the fit of my UNIQLO Supima cotton tees.

Quality and Value

Not only was the fit better than I was used to, but the quality of UNIQLO’s tees was better too.

The seams don’t dig into my skin, the stitching hasn’t frayed or come unraveled, and the colors haven’t faded much over the years.

Check Current Price

The Supima cotton is soft and comfortable to wear.

Just like with the fit, the quality of Buck Mason and Ruler of London tees seems to be higher. Understandably so since they sell at a much higher price point.

For under 25 dollars, UNIQLO Supima tees have great value.

Colors, Styles, and Sizes

Buying from massive international corporations definitely has its downsides. (UNIQLO has been accused of greenwashing, for one thing. The brand is also not the most sustainable). One advantage, however, at least in this case, is that UNIQLO has a wide range of options available.

UNIQLO offers tees in a bunch of different colors and fits.

I bought my tees a few years ago. Back then, UNIQLO offered short-length tees. I haven’t seen this option on their site in a while.

Today, there are crew neck tees and v-neck options, too. There are oversized tees and tees in different fabrics.

Sizes range from XXS to 3XL.

The Uniqlo Short-length Tee: One of the Best Options for Short Men

Purchasing UNIQLO short-length t-shirts marked an important step in my style journey. It was one of the first times that I bought a garment, online no less, that fit me well off the rack.

It was incredible for me to see and feel the difference between a shirt that fit and one that was too big for me. I remember trying a UNIQLO tee on and immediately feeling a surge of confidence. Finding a great tee propelled me to “level up” other areas of my wardrobe.

These days I prefer my Ruler of London and Buck Mason tees, but I still wear my UNIQLO tees regularly.

What’s a piece of clothing that you wear that helps you feel more confident? Let me know in the comments!

About Ryan Hallstrom

TMM's Senior Editor, Ryan Hallstrom is from Horseheads, NY, the only town in America named in honor of military packhorses. When he’s not writing about menswear, Ryan enjoys reading, whittling, running, and perfecting his penmanship.

Background: In 2021, Ryan graduated from Brigham Young University where he majored in American Studies and Russian. Before completing his schooling, he had a wide range of job titles including finish carpenter, usher, elevator operator (yes, that’s a real job), landscaper, tour guide, and more.

In January 2022, Ryan began working full-time as The Modest Man’s Senior Editor. In this role, he not only edits all articles prior to publication but also is a frequent contributor to the blog. He enjoys crafting in-depth product reviews (often testing items in extreme environments), helpful self-improvement articles, and detailed clothing guides.

His interest in men’s style stems from the examples of men in his family:

“Growing up, a lot of the men I looked up to dressed well. My dad is always clean-shaven and makes sure that he looks presentable before heading out the door, and my grandfather, who owned and operated a dairy farm, usually wore work pants with a sharp crease and a button-up work shirt.”

However, it wasn’t until the end of high school that Ryan began to care about how he looked. Gradually, over the next few years, he started to dress better and learn about style. “Finding clothes that fit helped me to become more confident. I find that when I try to dress well, I feel better.”

Expertise: Ryan has loved writing since an early age, and in college began contributing to and editing for university publications. After college, he began freelance writing and editing. He’s written from blogs and magazines such as Real Men Real Style, Life in the Finger Lakes, and Gentleman Within.

An avid traveler who spends plenty of time outdoors, Ryan appreciates clothes, footwear and accessories that can take a beating. His reviews often include long-term, thorough testing in extreme weather conditions.

Ryan has also spent more time in a suit and tie than most guys, so he's well qualified to write about classic menswear, business casual and formalwear.
