19 Things Men Think Are Romantic (But Women Secretly Can’t Stand)

Updated on September 19, 2025 by TMM Staff · Dating & Confidence

Romance can be quite tricky at times. A lot of men go out of their way to do things they believe will sweep a woman off her feet, but sometimes those grand gestures or classic moves end up backfiring. The truth is, what feels like a big show of love to a man can feel awkward, overwhelming, or even irritating to a woman.

These moments often come from good intentions, but that doesn’t always guarantee they land the way he expects. Here’s a breakdown of the common so-called romantic gestures that many women would rather skip.

1. Over-The-Top Public Proposals

A man dropping to one knee in the middle of a crowded restaurant or baseball game may sound like the ultimate fairy-tale moment, but most women don’t want their private relationship turned into a spectacle. The pressure of a hundred strangers watching can feel less like love and more like a performance.

Many women prefer intimacy when it comes to proposals, a setting where they can actually process their emotions instead of worrying about how to react on display. What men view as bold and unforgettable often feels overwhelming, forcing her to say yes under an audience’s gaze.

2. Dozen Red Roses Every Time

Roses are timeless, but when every occasion calls for the same dozen red roses, it starts to feel like a cliché rather than romance. It can seem more like a default move than a meaningful choice.

Women often appreciate thoughtfulness more than predictability. Picking flowers that reflect her personality, favorite colors, or even something seasonal feels more personal than sticking to the generic idea of romance.

3. Serenading With A Guitar

Some men believe breaking out a guitar and singing under a window is charming, but most women see it as awkward, especially if it happens in front of others. What’s romantic in a movie often lands differently in real life.

She may feel embarrassed, put on the spot, or unable to enjoy the gesture because it’s more about performance than intimacy. A better move is knowing her taste and respecting whether she’d actually enjoy that type of attention.

4. Long, Flowery Love Letters

Men sometimes pour their hearts into pages of old-fashioned poetry and think women will swoon. While the effort matters, many women find those letters overly dramatic and disconnected from the actual relationship.

What often resonates more is sincerity in fewer words. A short, heartfelt note about something specific she did that touched him carries more weight than recycled metaphors and grand declarations.

5. Jewelry As A Default Gift

Jewelry might sound like the ultimate romantic surprise, but when it’s given every holiday or milestone, it starts to feel transactional. Not every woman values a shiny necklace as much as men think.

She may prefer experiences, hobbies, or something tied to her real interests. The mistake comes when men assume that “romantic” always means sparkly, rather than being tuned in to who she really is.

6. Candlelit Dinners With No Conversation

A table full of candles may look romantic, but if the night is more about the setup than the actual connection, it falls flat. Ambiance alone won’t create closeness.

What she wants is a real exchange, laughter, and stories, not a dinner that feels like a staged scene out of a romance movie. Without genuine conversation, all those candles end up as background noise.

7. Quoting Cheesy Movie Lines

Repeating lines from The Notebook or Titanic might feel sweet to him, but to her, it can feel forced. When words aren’t his own, they lose authenticity.

Women often cringe when they hear rehearsed lines instead of raw honesty. They’d rather hear him stumble through his own feelings than rely on Hollywood scripts.

8. Surprise Visits At Work

Some men think showing up at her office with flowers or lunch proves romance, but to many women, it feels disruptive and awkward. Work is a professional space, not a stage for romantic gestures.

She may feel embarrassed in front of coworkers or pressured to react in a way that doesn’t fit the environment. Romance works best when it respects boundaries and timing.

9. Slow Dancing In Random Places

Trying to start a slow dance in the middle of a grocery store aisle may seem spontaneous, but most women find it uncomfortable. Real life doesn’t always need to turn into a music video.

While the idea of creating a magical moment sounds sweet, the setting matters. Most women would rather share that intimacy in a private space where they can relax instead of feeling watched.

10. Grand Speeches At Parties

When a man grabs a microphone to toast her in front of family or friends, it often feels less romantic and more like unnecessary pressure. What he sees as heartfelt may put her in a spotlight she never asked for.

She’d rather receive those words in a private moment where they can sink in without the noise of an audience. A grand speech may sound noble, but intimacy beats spectacle almost every time.

11. Buying Perfume Without Asking

Perfume seems like a classic romantic gift, but picking a scent for her without knowing her preferences often goes wrong. Fragrance is deeply personal, and wearing something she dislikes feels like pretending.

Instead of assuming what she’ll love, men score more points by noticing the little details, like the brand she already uses, or letting her choose something that feels true to her.

12. Writing Her Name In The Sand

While etching her name into a beach or carving initials into a tree might look romantic in movies, many women see it as corny in reality. It feels more about the gesture itself than actual intimacy.

Most women would rather have genuine experiences they can remember together instead of symbolic acts that don’t hold much meaning beyond the moment.

13. Overdoing Social Media Posts

Public declarations of love online can seem romantic to men, but many women find them unnecessary. Too many posts about anniversaries or long paragraphs in captions can feel performative.

She may prefer a private, sincere expression over a social media display that looks curated for likes. Romance thrives more in shared moments than in Instagram updates.

14. Overly Expensive Surprises

Lavish surprises like a designer handbag or first-class tickets can feel overwhelming instead of sweet. What some men consider romance, women may interpret as an attempt to impress or buy affection.

Thoughtful gestures tailored to her actual needs or dreams land much better than grand expenses that don’t reflect the reality of the relationship.

15. Endless Pet Names

Calling her “baby” or “princess” every other sentence may sound romantic, but after a while, it loses charm. Too many pet names can start to feel shallow.

Women want endearment that feels earned and natural, not repeated until it loses meaning. A simple, occasional nickname carries more warmth than a constant stream of them.

16. Holding Hands Too Tightly

Hand-holding is sweet, but when it turns into a vice-grip walk, it feels more like possession than romance. Men sometimes confuse intensity with affection.

Most women prefer a natural gesture, light and comfortable, instead of something that makes them feel physically restricted. Romance lives in ease, not in a forced grip.

17. Surprise Trips Without Consulting Her

While a man may think whisking her away on a mystery weekend screams romance, many women hate being thrown into plans without warning. Surprise travel can create more stress than joy.

She’d rather be included in the planning, knowing what to pack, what to expect, and having a say in how she spends her time. Romance works best when it respects her voice.

18. Reading Poetry Out Loud

Some men dust off Shakespeare or old sonnets, thinking it will stir her heart, but most women feel secondhand embarrassment. The dramatic delivery usually falls flat.

She wants romance that feels grounded in who he really is, not in borrowed words from centuries ago. Effort matters, but authenticity wins every time.

19. Overplanning Every Detail

Trying to orchestrate a “perfect” date down to every second can come across as rigid. Planning every second kills the fun, and most women would rather the night feel natural than like it’s following a script.

Most women prefer space for natural moments to unfold. Overplanning leaves no room for spontaneity, and that’s often where the real spark happens.
