15 Signs You’re Dating a “Soyboy” Who’s Not Ready for a Mature Woman Like You

Updated on March 2, 2026 by TMM Staff · Dating & Confidence

Look, we need to talk about something that’s been bugging you for a while now. That guy you’ve been seeing? The one who looks good on paper, says all the right things, and has his friends fooled into thinking he’s got his life together? Yeah, him. There’s a reason you keep getting this weird feeling in your gut when you think about the future with him.

Some guys never actually grow up. They stay stuck in this perpetual adolescence where they’re always “figuring things out” while expecting the women in their lives to do all the emotional heavy lifting. If you’ve been wondering whether the guy you’re dating falls into this category, these signs will tell you everything you need to know.

1. His Entire Personality Lives on Reddit and Discord

The guy practically has a PhD in online arguments. He’ll spend three hours debating strangers about Marvel movies or cryptocurrency, but ask him to plan an actual date? Crickets. His screen time averages eight hours daily, and most of that gets dedicated to explaining why people who disagree with him are “objectively wrong.”

Someone who exists primarily behind a screen hasn’t built anything tangible. No hobbies that require leaving the house, no friendships that involve actual face time, no opinions formed through experience. When his entire sense of self depends on upvotes and Discord moderator status, you’re dating an avatar, not a person.

2. He Turns Every Disagreement Into a Therapy Session About His Feelings

@Alena Darmel/Pexels.com

You mention that him showing up two hours late bothered you, and suddenly, you’re the villain in his origin story. He needs to “process” why your boundary made him feel “attacked.” What started as a simple conversation about respect morphs into an exhausting deep-dive where he’s the victim, and you’re responsible for managing his emotional response to your own feelings.

Being able to hear “hey, that hurt me” without falling apart is baseline adult behavior. When every attempt to address something gets hijacked by his need for validation, you’ll spend your entire relationship tiptoeing around his fragility instead of ever getting your needs met.

3. His Exes Are All “Crazy” (But He Won’t Say Why)

@Katerina Holmes/Pexels.com

Every woman he’s dated before you was “psycho,” “too much,” or “completely unstable.” But press him for details? The story gets real vague real fast. She “overreacted” to things he can’t quite remember. She had “issues” he can’t really explain.

Those women probably had legitimate problems with his behavior, and instead of looking inward, he decided they were the problem. People who take zero accountability for past relationships won’t suddenly develop it with you. You’ll be the next “crazy ex” he tells the next girl about, when you finally get fed up with his nonsense.

4. He Needs Permission to Make Basic Life Choices

Should he take that job offer? Apply for the promotion? Buy a new car? The guy can’t commit to anything without running it past you first. Not because he values your opinion, but because he needs someone else to take responsibility if things go wrong.

When someone outsources every decision to you, they get to avoid all the risk while you carry the blame if things don’t pan out. (And trust me, when that promotion doesn’t work out, he’ll find a way to make it your fault for encouraging him.)

5. His “Career Plan” Has Been the Same for Five Years

@Mikhail Nilov/Pexels.com

He’s definitely going to start that business. He’s totally working on his portfolio. He’s for sure going to quit his dead-end job once he figures out what he wants to do. Meanwhile, five years pass, and absolutely nothing changes except the excuses.

Anyone can dream big while doing absolutely nothing to make those dreams happen. He genuinely believes his own excuses. He thinks he’s “working on it” when really he’s perfecting the art of procrastination. You’ll waste years waiting for him to become the person he swears he’s about to be.

6. He Screams Woke, But Can’t Handle Real Conversations

@Timur Weber/Pexels.com

Oh, he’ll repost infographics about feminism and toxic masculinity all day long. He knows all the right buzzwords, follows all the right activists, and loves telling people how “aware” he is. But the second you bring up something he did that bothered you? All that progressive talk disappears, and you’re being “too sensitive.”

The performative activism is a shield. He uses it to position himself as one of the “good guys,” so he never has to examine his actual behavior. His version of enlightenment only applies to other people, never himself.

7. His Mom Still Does His Laundry (And He Sees Nothing Wrong With It)

@Eren Li/Pexels.com

The dude is thirty-five years old, and his mother comes by weekly to clean his apartment, cook his meals, and yes, do his laundry. When you point out that maybe he could learn to operate a washing machine himself, he gets genuinely confused. “But why would I do that when she doesn’t mind?”

He’s fundamentally incapable of taking care of himself because someone else has always done it for him. And guess who he expects to take over when Mom eventually can’t do it anymore? You’re not signing up to be his partner. You’re auditioning to be his replacement caretaker.

8. He’s Obsessed With “Self-Care” But Won’t Actually Work on Himself

@Andrea Piacquadio/Pexels.com

Face masks? Check. Meditation app? Downloaded. Therapy speak? Fluent. But actual personal growth that requires discomfort and change? Absolutely not. He loves the aesthetic of self-improvement without doing any of the actual improving.

He’d rather buy another self-help book than apply the advice from the fifteen he already owns. When someone treats personal development like a trendy hobby instead of actual work, they’re chasing the feeling of growth without ever actually growing.

9. He Agrees With Everything You Say (Then Resents You Later)

@cottonbro studio/Pexels.com

You suggest a restaurant, and he’s down. You pick the movie, and he loves it. You want to spend Saturday with your friends, and there’s no problem at all. He’s so agreeable, so easy-going, so… wait, why does he seem annoyed three days later? Turns out he didn’t want any of those things but said yes anyway.

You can’t read his mind, and you shouldn’t have to play detective to figure out what he actually wants. People who can’t voice their preferences in the moment will punish you for their own cowardice later.

10. His Version of “Helping” Requires Detailed Instructions Every Time

@MART PRODUCTION/Pexels.com

He’ll help with dinner if you tell him exactly what to do, when to do it, and how to do it. He’ll run errands if you write out a list, text him reminders, and basically project-manage his every move. The mental load of asking him to help is more exhausting than doing it yourself.

This is weaponized incompetence at its finest. Notice how he somehow manages to excel at his video games and remember every detail of his favorite show’s lore? He’s not incompetent. He’s selective about where he applies his competence.

11. He Gets Weirdly Competitive With Your Success

@Mikhail Nilov/Pexels.com

You get a raise? He mentions how his job is actually more stressful. You nail a presentation? He brings up something he did three months ago that was “way harder.” You achieve something you’re proud of? Somehow the conversation becomes about him within ninety seconds.

Your wins threaten his ego because he’s measuring his worth against yours instead of building his own. When someone can’t let you have a moment without making it about themselves, they’re telling you they need you to fail so they can feel adequate.

12. He Thinks Going Radio Silent Will Fix The Problem

@cottonbro studio/Pexels.com

You’re upset about something legitimate, and he goes completely silent. He withdraws, stops responding, maybe throws in a few one-word answers until enough time passes that he thinks you’ve forgotten about it. He never actually addresses the issue, never apologizes, never changes his behavior.

He’s banking on you getting tired of being upset and dropping it, which means he never has to take accountability for anything. Problems pile up, your frustration grows, and eventually you’ll either explode or give up completely.

13. He Treats Your Time Like an Afterthought

@www.kaboompics.com/Pexels.com

Thirty minutes late, an hour late, sometimes he’ll cancel at the last minute because something “came up.” But try suggesting he skip his gaming session or cut short his gym time to accommodate something important to you? His schedule is carved in stone and completely non-negotiable.

The double standard says everything about how much he values you. Your time is flexible and disposable. His time is sacred and protected. When someone consistently shows you that their priorities matter more than yours, they’re telling you exactly where you rank in their life.

14. His Idea of Ambition Peaked in College

@Startup Stock Photos/Pexels.com

He’s still telling stories about that one semester he did really well. He’s still riding the high of some achievement from eight years ago. He talks about his potential constantly, but never actually pursues anything. The guy’s permanently stuck in “what could have been” mode.

Living in past glory means he’s given up on creating new achievements. You’ll hear the same stories on loop while watching him scroll through life without purpose or direction, wondering why you’re the only one bothered by his complete lack of momentum.

15. He Expects You to Fix Him (But Gets Mad When You Try)

A man in a hoodie looking out a rain-covered window.
@@felipepelaquim/Pexels.com

He wants you to motivate him, inspire him, push him to be better. Basically, do all the work of his personal development for him. But the second you actually suggest he change something or offer real feedback? He gets defensive, shuts down, or accuses you of “not accepting him as he is.”

Support him too much, and you’re controlling. Don’t support him enough, and you’re unsupportive. Offer suggestions, and you’re critical. Say nothing, and you don’t care. He wants a magical force that fixes all his problems while never making him uncomfortable or accountable.
