15 Relationship Dealbreakers That Quietly Signal It’s Time for a Bigger Life Change

Relationships end, but not always due to the conventional and stereotypical reasons like explosive fights, cheating, and so on. Some relationships end not with such conflagrations, but with subtle and imperceptible silence. They cease because they become replete with emotional erosion, needs that aren’t fulfilled, and a growing sense that gradually sets into the minds of both partners that it simply isn’t working anymore. These are just some of the dealbreakers that bring about the destruction of a relationship, and they aren’t always noticeable. They make a relationship feel heavy and unsustainable. Read on and learn about the dealbreakers that reveal that a relationship should end and that a change needs to be made in this regard.

Feeling Lonelier

You should realize that your relationship has lost its appeal and connection when you start feeling lonelier even when your partner is sitting right next to you. It means that emotional connection has been drained, and the only viable option left to you now is to move away and find someone else who can give you the connection and emotional attention that you need.

Communication Turns into Constant Defensiveness

You know that it is time for a change when every conversation with your partner starts feeling like a debate that you can’t win. You no longer listen to each other and make no attempts to understand each other’s perspectives. You are focused on barreling through these conversations instead of connecting with your partner and that should let you know that the relationship is headed for certain disaster.

Needs are Minimized Consistently

You should realize that your relationship has run its course when your needs are always ignored and minimized by your partner. You can explain your feelings, concerns, needs, and even the things that hurt you, and they will be quick to dismiss them as trivial or label you insensitive. This shows that they no longer value or respect you and it is better to leave such a relationship than stay and suffer in it.

Respect has Eroded

Kindness is no longer to be found anywhere in your relationship. It has been replaced silently by contempt, eye-rolling, dismissive behavior, and cutting sarcasm. Love can’t survive in such a hostile environment where respect is nowhere to be found.

Fear of Honesty

You should understand that there is something seriously wrong with your relationship when you filter and censor your words and thoughts to avoid conflict, emotional withdrawal, and silent treatment from your partner. It shows that the relationship has been drained of all emotinoal safety and once it is gone, it can never return.

One-Sided Effort

When you are the only one who still exerts some effort or shows interest in keeping the relationship going, then it is time you gave up on this prospect. When you are the one who initiates conversations, makes plans, initiates intimacy, and attempts to repair and resolve issues without any similar action being taken by your partner, then it shows that the relationship has run out of steam.

Core Values No Longer Align

A relationship can no longer continue if both partners fail to reach the same ground when it comes to values about lifestyle, money, faith, long-term goals, and so on. This creates persistent tension and stress in the relationship, which eventually rips it apart.

Unresolved Conflict

Another indicator of a relationship having lost all connection is when the same arguments keep on repeating without any palpable or effective solution in sight. Apologies made are insincere and temporary and the rate of growth becomes inconsistent. This leads to resentment and bitterness setting in within the relationship and it gradually erodes its foundation completely.

Growth is Resisted

You might feel like you are the only one who is interested and feels compelled to pursue growth in the relationship while your partner openly and utterly resists it. Be it emotional, mental, physical, or spiritual growth, you will find yourself alone on the road to achieving it, and that leads to resentment, which indubitably leads to the relationship’s shattering.

Trust Feels Permanently Damaged

It seems like you have lost all trust in your partner after having suffered frequent lies, repeated emotional and physical betrayals, and repeated boundary violations. This cracks the very foundation of your relationship, the trust that you had for your partner and once it is gone, it can never be restored. It is better to move on under these circumstances.

Feeling More Like a Caretaker Than Partner

If the relationship starts feeling parental and exhausts you, then it is clearly time for a change. Relationships are partnerships and shouldn’t feel emotionally draining. If there is no mutual support and your partner takes your efforts for granted, then it is time you moved onto better pursuits in love and found someone who appreciates and supports you.

Intimacy Feels Forced or Absent

Intimacy, physical and emotional, is the cornerstone of any relationship. Once it disappears or starts feeling contrived, pretentious, and awkward, then the odds of such a relationship surviving are slim to none.

Justifying Your Partner’s Behavior to Others

When you find yourself explaining to others about your partner’s behavior and attitude, minimizing their actions and defending their mistakes and misconduct, then that is not okay at all. You are just avoiding the hard truth that your partner is a terrible person, one who doesn’t value you and isn’t invested in the relationship at all.

Staying Out of Fear, Not Love

You should know that your relationship isn’t healthy when you persist in it simply to escape isolation, from a fear of having to start over again, or from reticence about disrupting your life. There is no genuine desire on your part to stay out of love and commitment and that should indicate to you that your relationship isn’t healthy or suitable and that a change is needed.

Intuition Keeps Whispering

That quiet inner voice in your head persistently warns you about what you already know in your heart, that your relationship isn’t as stable or strong as you have deluded yourself into believing. You should pay heed to your intuition, because otherwise it might cost you your peace, confidence, self-respect, and very sanity.

Final Thoughts

Not all relationships are worthy of being saved. Some serve to teach you and wake you up to the harsh realities of life. They push you towards growth, becoming a better, stronger, and braver version of yourself who stands a better chance of finding success in love and all aspects of life as well.
