Black Friday 2014

Gentlemen, it's that time again. Black Friday is upon us. For me, this means avoiding stores and malls at all costs. I'll do my shopping from the safety and comfort of my living room, and I recommend you do the same.

Many online stores, including Amazon, have started their Black Friday sales.

In no particular order, here are my picks for short men:

Dragon Inside

Dragon Inside Suit ReviewIf you haven't heard of this made-to-measure suit company, check out my Dragon Inside review. Or, just know that Dragon Inside is, by far, my favorite online custom suit maker.

I've tried a bunch, and Dragon Inside consistently produces better fitting, higher-quality suits than any other brand I've bought from.

Right now, you can get $50 off any suit order OR $100-150 of free accessories. The choice is yours. Either way, it's a great deal.

$50 off any suit

If you're in the market for your first suit, a good start would be the Essential Grey Suit (made from Italian wool). Half-canvas construction, super versatile color.

It's a perfect choice for guys who only need one or two suits since it will look good with most shirt/tie combos and many different types/colors of shoes.

Williams Cashmere Scarves$49.99

Not only are these 100% cashmere and marked down from $150, they're also great for short men (at 62″ long and 7″ wide). Might as well grab a couple of different colors!

Cole Haan Mens Glenn Chukka Boot – $136.80 (varies by size)

Simply put, these are the most versatile shoes I own. I probably wear them two or three every week. They come with lighter colored laces, but you can replace them with any laces you like.

These tend to run a bit small and narrow, so if you're in between sizes, round up.

Timex watches$16-35

All kinds of Timex watches on sale, including Easy Readers and Weekenders, both of which have small case diameters that look great on thin wrists.

Collar Stays (36 pack)$39.95 $6.95

Lots of different sizes, which is great for short men. Often times, our shirt collars have shorter point lengths (especially if you're buying custom shirts), which makes many collar stays too long.

Modern Tailor

Use the promo code BLACK7 for up to 45% off your purchase.

Modern Tailor is one of the more affordable made-to-measure clothiers. I don't have any experience with their suits, but I've bought a few shirts from them, and they fit great.

If you've been thinking about giving custom clothing a shot, now would be a great time to order a shirt from Modern Tailor.

J. Crew

Use the promo code MONDAY during checkout for 30-40% off your purchase.

Classic Macalister Boots$103.60

These are my second favorite pair of shoes. The grey suede works perfectly with almost any jeans or chinos, but the other colors are nice too. You can save about $50 with this deal.

Plus, they're unisex, so you can get them all the way down to size 5 (US).

Merino Wool V-Neck Sweater (multiple colors) – $34.95

Express Merino Wool Sweaters

I love v-neck wool sweaters, and Express has some of the best for the price (on sale, that is). Pick up a few different colors because these are perfect for wearing over a button up shirt in the fall and winter. I have one in navy, green and grey.

Rocco Slim Fit Jeans$49.00

These aren't designer, raw denim, selvedge jeans. They're softer and more stretchy, which means no break-in period. Of course, they won't last as long, and they develop that nice fade and patina that raw denim is known for. But the fit is spot on (make to to go with “skinny leg” for a nice taper.

J. Crew Factory

Use the promo code YOUVEGOTSALE during checkout for 50% off everything.

Factory Walker Vest$39.50

I just bought two of these vests, one in grey and one in red. They're super versatile and perfect for layering. Plus they fit short men wonderfully. They don't have sleeves, so you don't have to worry about them being too long, and the torso is shorter than most other vests I've found (including others from JCF).

This is a steal at $39.50.

Banana Republic

Use the promo code CYBER during checkout for 30% off your purchase.

Where to start… so many great deals at BR right now!

Camel Wool Topcoat$208.60

I just picked this one up for myself. The XS might be backordered, but it's worth the wait. Sure, the sleeves will need to be shortened, but I saved $90 so no biggie.

Textured Wool Topcoat$208.60

If camel isn't your thing, check out this dark grey wool topcoat. I actually have one of these too, and it fits wonderfully (after having the sleeves shortened). Nice and slim, perfect length for my 5'6″ frame.

Aiden Slim Fit Wool Pants$68.95

Plenty of sizes and colors left, although I like the grey best. The fit is spot on if you like slim, tapered-but-not-tight pants. Might need hemming (story of your life, right?).

Heritage Five-Pocket Pant$68.95

These are slimmer than the Aidens. Super tapered (probably a 7″ leg opening). They're made from a soft brushed cotton. The button fly kind of sucks, but you get used to it.

Definitely some of my favorite casual pants.

Aiden Slim-Fit Chino$41.99 (holy cow!)

These are simply the best-fitting, highest quality chinos I own. I have four pairs, and I wear them all the time.

They're slim but not skinny. If you need more room, check out the Emerson.

Allen Edmonds

AE already has a bunch of shoes on sale, and they'll probably add more throughout the week. Most are available down to size 6.5 (US).

Right now, my picks are:

Peter Manning

Peter Manning Everyday ShirtUse the promo code CYBER20 for 20% off everything.

If you read this blog, you know I love Peter Manning clothing. In fact, I'm wearing one of their shirts right now. It fits great because Peter Manning makes clothes specifically for men 5'8″ and under.

They're not the cheapest clothes in the world, but you won't have to pay for alterations. Plus they're 20% for Black Friday/Cyber Monday. Check 'em out.

Short Man Style Guide (discount)

This is a premium eBook guide, created by The Modest Man, that's perfect for men who like accelerated learning. It's like a condensed version of everything on this blog.

Normally this guide sells for $27, but it's currently on sale for just $9 (eBook) or $17 (eBook + audio).

  1. Very cool! Thanks for this list.

RE: the Banana Republic topcoats, do you think the XA would be too big for a 5’3″ guy?

  2. Awesome, Brock! Thanks!

Quick question: For Modern Tailor, which collar style do you recommend?
I’m 5’7″ athletic build and I generally don’t wear ties, but it would be useful if the collar did complement a tie (for versatility purposes).

    • Depends on face shape. If you have a narrow face, go with a point collar (vs a spread or wide collar). Button down collar is more casual.

Personally, I like short point collars and try to avoid spreads.
